BROADBAND: Things Cable & Phone Companies Don't Tell You

Welcome! Read On and Enjoy!
This website is mainly dedicated to those who have had their 1st Cable Modem/DSL for 1-24 days. Intermediate and even some advanced users will also hopefully find 5 or 9 interesting and helpful tidbits here.
BROADBAND consists mainly of useful links and commercial downloads relating to getting top performance out of your high-speed modem. My own experience fine tuning, some do's and don't's are also included (my perspective remember).

Yeah, that's Yours Truly up there ------ Hope U Find Following Useful.
Links to four other of our websites can be found throughout these pages. Thought I'd put this upfront. On Links Page there is a Link to "T-Shirt Transfer Express" mainly for small children to pick out their own cartoon choice for a large T-Shirt that they can wear as nightshirt. Our other Websites are of the Political Parody type.

If these Tips and Tweaks look useful to you, you may want to Print this homepage to implement internal windows settings changes. Please feel free to e-mail FWD this Link or Entire Page to any friend to whom you think it would be helpful. Will answer questions FREE via Contact Page or Guestbook Page.

Download Speed Patch from speedguide.net NOW!

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO WADE THRU ALL THIS, you may serenly Pass GO and proceed immediately to the "Links Page"

Okay , here we go. AFTER you have installed the speedpatch from speedguide.net (the one most commonly used is "sguide_tweak_98_ME"), and rebooted your computer, well, try it out. Do some surfing. Download something. THEN, I suggest the following to further 'enhance' performance of said speed patch:

Go to the microsoft Homepage > Highlight Downloads Tab & clic Windows Update > Dwnld ALL of the CRITICAL Updates >reboot > run scandisk & defrag (in defrag, clic settings button on 1st popup little window > UNCHECK the TOP Box & check the 2nd one. The top box is bullshit); return to microsoft updates page > download and install any 'recommended' updates that you will REALLY USE (or are at least interested in).

I find it very handy to write down the dwnld title (some of 'em don't give a hint as to what their actual function is), & beside it write down briefly what each dwnld actually is/does. This way, U wanna Uninstall it, you have the filename.

TRY (I know it can be difficult) & use a SEPERATE PIECE of PAPER for this. Reboot again > go to start > programs > asscessories > system tools > disk cleanup (little whisk broom icon) > ONLY CHECK top line (temporary internet files) > delete them > run System Mechanic if you have it (see Links Page) > clic SYSTEM Button > Scan Registry > remove any shown files > exit window > clic files tab > clic to "Find & remove junk & obsolete files" (top line) > clic Scan in upper right > Remove all shown files > and unless you REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOIN' I'd let it go at that > exit System Mechanic > run scandisk & defrag again & reboot.

You system should be running noticably quicker.

Optimizing Windows Accessable Internal Settings
All Windows Programs from Win95 thru WinMe and the soon-to-be-released Winxp, come with (for the most part) "mid-range" internal settings. ALL accessable settings should be optimized - usually to the Max, as your Cable Modem/DSL can easily handle the new, faster settings. Here are some of the most common settings to change:

**** start>settings>control panel>System>Performance Tab>File System>Change role to "Network Server">system restore and read ahead to max and full>OK>graphics>hardwareaccelleration to full>OK>Virtual Memory>put dot in circle for "Let Windows manage...">OK

**** Win 98 & WinMe only: open recycle bin>clic tools>folder options>at bottom activate 'single clic' option>apply>OK>>>View Tab>from top, leave 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th blank>check all other boxes>uncheck: show hidden files/folders>OK>>>File Types Tab:>LEAVE AS IS>Advanced button>check 'confirm after download'>OK>close

**** start>settings>control panel>internet options>General:here you can type in URL of ANY webpage you want as your homepage when you boot up your computer. Just go there copy URL (or write it down) & then paste or type in as new homepage>SKIP Temporary Internet Files Tab>Security:leave as is unless well versed here>Content Tab: Leave as is unless getting "Page cannot be displayed" often>if getting message, e-mail me (or I'll put it in here later).

**** Connections Tab>LEAVE ALL BLANK if CABLE...remember, you're using an external modem now. For some unknown reason, Windows will occassionally go into it's "This Page Cannot Be Displayed Mode". If this happens 3 or more times in a row, do the following:
Go to "Tools Tab" in upper bar, clic it>Internet Options>Connections>UNCHECK Proxy Server Box>OK>OK>Home or Refresh>You pc should surf naturally now.
This may happen once every other day or so. I do not know why. But if it does, you now know how to solve it.
